Review: Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon

Review: Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon

I have a thing for doughnuts. My egg allergy makes this obsession a little difficult, but I am willing to dedicate the time and effort into finding and eating doughnuts. Before going to Voodoo Doughnuts, I have eaten three doughnuts in my life. Three. How unfortunate is that? The first thing on my list for my Portland vacation, was to visit this mystical, magical, doughnut making heaven.

I don't know if you've heard about the famed line ups to sample some of these treats, but these urban legends are entirely true. From the end of the line to the crash register, it was close to an hour wait.

I really love how much effort they put into the little details of their shop. It gave their brand and their product a funky, unique and upbeat vibe. The doughnut shop was the kind of strange and wonderful place where you could stare at the decor for hours and still be enthralled.

The glittery brick wall was my particular favourite.

The helpful sign posted outside the front door; be careful of the voodoo magic.

After scanning the menu board, I decided on a vegan Oreo doughnut. When it was finally our turn, I went up to the counter and shouted out my order over the din of the crowd and lo and behold, the Oreo doughnut came out from the back with a peanut butter drizzle all over the top. Dreams crushed.

I decided on the classic vegan raised doughnut with chocolate and my boyfriend, Lewis, went with the Portland Cream, which is similar to a Boston Cream doughnut.

Guys, I know why everyone waits in line so long for these. They are amazing! I have never eaten a vegan doughnut that is so light and fluffy, yet rich, sweet and chewy at the same time. The milk chocolate coating was so ooey, gooey delicious I was losing my mind on the bench outside.

If you aren't limited by food allergies, there are some pretty crazy flavours and designs I saw other customer's purchasing, that I'm sure are just as delicious.

If you find yourself in the Portland area, you're going to want to stop here, it'll be worth the wait, promise.

Voodoo Doughnut ONE (the original location) is located at 22 SW 3rd Avenue in Portland Oregon.
